Meet Niina Aoki – she loves cats, things with scrunched-up faces and teapots!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! My name is Niina and I live in Perth, Western Australia. Working as an illustrator and maker of things, I’m a cat fanatic and adore my exotic shorthair, Panko.
Do you have a favourite side project of your own?
At the moment I am working on my project “50 cats of perth” where I am painting 50 cats currently living in Perth. Once I have all 50 painted I am going to compile them all into an A3 art print. So far it has been amazing to see all the beautiful local cats and a privilege to draw them.
What does “living creatively” mean to you?
Making things. Whether it’s making a drawing or crafting things, it’s something I have always done ever since I can remember. If I couldn’t make things, I don’t know what I would do with my life!
What’s your current obsession?
CATS! It’s a constant obsession for me so apart from that, I’ve been really into making repeating patterns. There is something so satisfying about creating a pattern that repeats!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t be afraid, you are good and you will also get better. Stop worrying about what other people think and do what you want. Step outside of your comfort zone, even if it’s just a baby step at a time.
